麦丽萍

Christine Mak 麦丽萍 singapore artist 新加坡画家

I have a number of Chinese ink brush paintings by local artist Christine Mak. Her style is somewhat westernized, as illustrated in the above composite picture using two of her paintings. More pictures are published in her own website chritinemak.com as well as the site of Eagle's Eye Gallery, from which I bought a number of her works (though none shown here - my digital camera is not quite good enough to reproduce the colours correctly.)

I have two still-lifes that show a theme she often uses, each with a plate of fruits, but one with some orchids growing in a porcelain pot, and one with some cut orchids in a glass vase. I also have three with the red girl/blue boy scheme she used for a period. Recently I bought one with 8 newborn chicks walking past a glass.

I do not have any of her works similar to the deep green autumn leaves inserted into the picture at top, which I do not particularly like. I find that Christine Mak's pictures have a special exuberant spirit that comes across in the flowers, fruits, animals, human figures, etc, and you can see that exuberance very clearly in the colourful leaves, but somehow too obvious for my taste. The more subtly expressed spirit in the other types appealed to me more.

My son happens to like her too, and I gave him two of the smaller still-lifes I had, during one of his visits here; then replaced them with larger ones that have a similar theme. They make me feel contented (provided I am in the mood to be made contented - there are times when I prefer to be angry, depressed, expansive, tough, needy...)

(麦丽萍seems to be a fairly common name, and a web search on google or baidu turns up many unrelated pages; there are also some unrelated Christine Maks, I think living in Hongkong; also, 麦利平happens to be a blood pressure medicine used in China, and a search with mailiping turns up some reports on the medicine being researched by a team in 沈阳; in addition, the search also turned up a large number of blog pages from someone using mailiping as ID.)
