I identify one moment in history when culture started its still ongoing terminal decline: when reporters asked John Lennon how to achieve world peace. Some time after, he and Yoko Ono declared a lie-in (this was not long after the Vietnam "teach-ins", big anti war seminars, which were then followed hippie "love-ins", free love parties and orgies): he would promote world peace by staying in bed all day, because, if everyone stayed in bed all day, they cannot be fighting and there can be no wars
Lennon was a talented musician and publicist, but I doubt he had particular knowledge about world peace, or ever spent much time thinking about the issue. To treat him as a suitable spokesperson on the topic was an act of real desperation: our society was just too short of credible sources of expertise and authority, and reporters regarded John Lennon to be as good a source of answers relative to politicians, diplomats and professors. It is not surprising that in today's world, politicians, diplomats, professors, and whatever other professions that people pay lip service to as worthy of respect, are less prominent than Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. However, at least they have not been asked to make pronuncements about world peace, yet
I recall a visit by Frank Sinatra to Australia (during which his comments on female journalists got himself into a union ban that prevented him from travelling in his chartered plane or getting meals in hotels, which were resumed only after he apologized, sort of), his spokesman was visibly annoyed when reporters could not think of better questions to ask than what Sinatra had for breakfast. But then, what do you expect? Questions about world peace?
It is inevitable that stars do what stars do, and we spend all our time looking at those activities, setting aside the s."heavier" issues. Even Osama bin Laden had to adopt the star techniques when he wanted attention - now that he could not longer command another 911 attack
Maybe he should lie in bed all day as his contribution to world peace: if terrorist stay in bed all day, they wont be blowing us up...
Edison Chan 陈冠希 a brief comment: I have seen most of the photos; they are real, not faked by digital composition, and indeed Gillian Chung's statement to press "I was naive and silly... I regret the negative public effect" basically admits this; she did not appear to be drunk or drugged in the photos - in fact among the 6-7 women in the photos, Cecilia Cheung was the only one that appeared to be under the influence; from the way in some photos the girls look into the camera, which is held in Edison's hand, they agreed to being photographed
I believe Chan and the others had much admiration for porn stars and wanted that kind of experience - perhaps such admiration for superior performance is widespread, but only some people have the thick skin to actually try it out - and stars almost certainly have thicker skins than you and me
as for the fans, advertisers, fiance, future in laws, etc, they might say they accept this, but most would not - we are all hypocrites, like the people in the photos

Edison Chan was originally scheduled to return to HK today and give a press conference tomorrow; this has been cancelled (one report giving the nonsensical reason that the usual venues are fully booked for Chinese New Year activities, or the owner of the hall previously arranged to use has refused permission for security reasons; the reason given by the agency company was "Chan has some things to settle in US" at least is vague enough to include the reason which I guess is correct - Chan's safety in HK is still uncertain, as various semi-legal interest groups embedded in the entertainment industry were disturbed and needed to be pacified)
the episode has confirmed the worst suspicions and rumours about the industry: the participants have low personal morals, partly because sex is used as lubricant to smoothen one's way up with owners, producers, directors, co-stars, etc, and partly because before actresses/singers/models became well known, they had no choice but to earn income in seedy ways, if not as prostitutes, then at least as escort girls who receive money to have dinners or go to places with rich clients
added on 18/2/08 who is Kira?
If you follow Japanese manga, I guess you know Kira is the main character of the serial killer thriller who taunts the police and the public with a new murder each time some announcement is made about him, in order to prove it was wrong; the person (or persons) who has been posting the sex photos used this ID and operates in a similar taunting mode.
Initially the police thought Kira was one of the guys in the computer repair shop where Chan took his Mac for repair in 2006, but Kira immediately came back with a massive posting to show he had not been caught. Subsequently news reports (I think invented by reporters in guessing mode, with no evidence at all) that the episode was a publicity stunt by the studios, that Kira was blackmailing them and being paid off to stop, that he was paid by rival studios out to damage the stars in the photos, that Chan's father's enemies/creditors were behind it... appeared, and each time Kira responded with a new set of postings to contradict the stories.
I believe:
1. the computer shop guys, or someone else who has access to the Mac after it was repaired, was offering the photos for sale to the media since 2006,
2. words were circulating among a small number of people about the photos and someone bought copies, but hesitated to publish them and was looking for the right opportunity, either to publish or to resell them
3. one magazine, either already knowing this or in an unrelated "journalistic scoop", photographed Gillian Chung in a changing room and published the semi-nude (now looking very tame) stuff; it was widely condemned, with Gillian throwing a tandrum about how damaging this was to her "clean image"
4. this immediately increased the shock value of the sex photos, and marketing became more active; but hesitation remained. to start things off, Kira was asked to anonymously post on the web;
5. with the photos already circulating among the experienced web users, it became natural and justifiable for the regular media to follow suit
added on 21/02/08 Kira has gone quiet; no new photos for a week now; there is one report claiming that the collection included photos of some upper class HK women, some married some single; I am inclined to believe this - the media would not risk lawsuits for invasion of privacy, which the stars cannot so easily claim since they already have much publicity; it appears that Kira has already used up the photos of stars and has no incentive to publish the others
added on 22/2/08, 9pm: still nothing from Kira; I think the event is petering out.
Public figures, privacy and morality
A few years ago there was a logically rather weird lawsuit in Hollywood: Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas sued a newspaper for invasion of privacy by taking unauthorized photos at their wedding. The problem was that they already signed an exclusive contract with another paper to publish their wedding photos; in other words, the wedding was not meant to be private. What they were really trying to protect was intellectual property: the wedding scenes were valuable assets which they own, and have the right to sell to someone they choose, and other people cannot infringe the assets.
In other words, public figures who drive commercial values from their privacy have a harder time obtaining legal protection for it, because the protection has already been shifted to a different domain. A somewhat similar situation exists with the reputation of politicians, which is an intangeable asset they need to use when seeking office. Since their personal character is part of the assets they put in front of the public, it can be discussed and probed by the public. If any reports unfairly damage their reputations and hence their careers, they are entitled to seek significant compensations, but mere invasion of privacy and minor inaccuracies in reports and comments, are just professional hazards they have to live with.
Each of us have an ugly side that we keep hidden, but for public figures this is much harder to achieve. Further, people who are used to appearing in public have thicker skins and are more likely to do things others are too embarrassed to do; hence, they have more to hide. Yet, public figures usually have some kind of ideal image that they try to maintain, so that they are specially sensitive about their hidden side; at the same time, others are all the more keen to dig that side out because of this, and if they cannot find anything major, would dig out trivialities, or even invent something out of nothing, as long as the stories attract some paying readers.
The result is a mischievous scene in which all public figures and all reporters look deviant and immoral, with bad influence on the next generation.
Whether one is a public figure or not, it is always best to have few secrets, since every secret is a burden, even perhaps a potential threat waiting to be exploited by someone who gets hold of it. It is in everyone's interest to reduce the number of secrets, basically by putting a diluted version of it before anyone else knows the story. Today everyone has the means to set up a blog, which provides an excellent means to achieve this purporse; in fact one can derive some advertising value from this while reducing the burdens and threats.

Edison Chan gave his statement to HK press an hour ago, and there was no new information; the main effect is to put a stop to all that speculation about where he is, etc - HK reporters failed to intercept him at the airport nor pin down his whereabouts till his appearance at 3.05pm at the conference room, not such good paparazzis!
I wont take his stated wish to leave the entertainment industry and work in charity very seriously - it wont be long before some company thinks of some way of building a new career on top of all that publicity; the current interesting issue is how Kira will respond - does he still have ammunition, and even stronger ammunition, to use and retake the initiative?
